5th Conference on Authors' Rights by the Initiative Urheberrecht

On 20 November 2017, Initiative Urheberrecht will host its 5th conference on the development of copyright law in the information age at the Academy of Arts next to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

The practical implications of digitalisation for the cultural and creative industries can now be seen more clearly. German and European copyright policies determine the legal basis for work and thus the basis of existence of German and European authors and artists.

We want to put the results of the latest German legislative reform and the development status of EU directives and regulations under close scrutiny and ask whether they have achieved their goals, e.g. whether they were able to improve the enforcement of appropriate remuneration of creatives (or will be able to in the near future). We also want to examine the impacts of the interconnectedness of global markets and the domination of global players on the situation of authors and artists.

Renowned experts will present the state of affairs and outline recent developments. The conference provides a unique public forum for discussion: the positions of political representatives, cultural and media industry representatives and artists and authors are exchanged in the form of keynote lectures and various panels, and possible concepts are developed for the future.

The "5th Conference on Authors‘ Rights by the Initiative Urheberrecht" will focus on the following points:

  • 1. International developments:
    Strategies of the Internet industry
    Legal analysis
  • 2. European copyright policy: state of affairs
  • 3. Results of the German policy in recent years and demands for the new Bundestag
